What’s Happening Melbourne? – August Edition

Melbourne, welcome to August. We know it’s still cold as ice and you’d much rather be hibernating, but, the month ahead is so jam-packed with action, you’ll almost forget the cold. An upcoming glamping festival will have you ripe and ready for summer, you’ll be out and about with one of Australia’s funniest men one night and drinking the most tropical of beers the next. Oh, and don’t forget a night in theatre with Australia’s king of screen and dance, Mr Hugh Jackman. Without further ado, here’s our top list of all the events worth getting to this month.

August 1 Melbourne International Film Festival

Who doesn’t love a great flick? Here’s your chance to not only watch international trailers in envy but to see them and some of the movies not always accessible at your regular cinema on the big screen. For the serious film buffs you might want to consider a membership which gets you early access to bookings, entry to the festival launch, year-round discounted parking and discounted tickets during the festival and at partner cinemas.

August 10 Snow Patrol

On the back of releasing a new single and album, one of the UK’s top Scottish/Irish rock bands are returning for a night at Palais Theatre in St. Kilda. Leading the stage from 8 pm, Snow Patrol will be serenading us with bangers from their latest album Wilderness you’ll wish never ended. Time Won’t Go Slowly Though and you’ll beg it to last, but there’s a little part of you that’ll love the rush.

August 17 Aug North Melbourne v Port Adelaide

Join the locals from North Melbourne in their match against interstate gurus Port Adelaide. Kicking off at 7:25 pm at Dockland’s Marvel Stadium, it’s a good chance to support the local boys in doing what we do best.

August 17 Aug Storm vs Raiders

Another interstate showdown on home grounds, Melbourne Storm and Canberra Raiders is set to be an action-packed match not to be missed. Kicking off at 5:30 pm at AAMI Park, help the homegrown heroes as the end of the season fast approaches.

August 16 Hugh Jackman – The Man. The Music. The Show

Hugh Jackman is one of Australia’s most well-known men. He’s been described as the perfect trio; a man who can sing, dance and is charming. At 50 he motivates and inspires up-and-coming theatre enthusiasts as the all-in-one actor, singer and producer takes the stage with character, charisma and charm. Catch a glimpse for yourself at his The Man. The Music. The Show world tour as he brings songs from his performances in The Greatest Showman, Les Miserables and Broadway.

August 23 Harley Breen – Not Quite Right

One of Australia’s funniest men. He’s a new age comedian able to tell a story and bring sensitive issues to light while a crowd sits in hysterics. Join the Nimbin-loving father of two as he drinks three-quarter lattes filled of self-confidence in his latest performance since last year’s Melbourne Comedy Fest. From yacht clubs and the real boat people to why he loves wearing checkered shirts, it’s a night you wouldn’t want to miss–we promise.

Friday 24, Saturday 24th

August 24 Aug Blobfish Beer Festival

A day to celebrate the funkiest of beers from sours to tropical and the more quirky like salt and pepper. Coming in late August, Melbourne Meat Market will host 16 different breweries from across Australia and New Zealand. Keep an eye out for local guys Sailors Grave, Sydney’s La Sirene and Kiwi favourite The Garage Project.

August 30 Boho Luxe Market and Glamping Festival

While it might be a little too cool for most to get out and enjoy nature, that doesn’t mean you can’t dream. Taking the grounds at the Royal Exhibition Building, Boho Luxe Market provides a night for us to explore all things glamping from Kombi’s to beautiful tents and clever accessories, all to make your stay glorious.

August 30 – Melbourne Writer’s Fest

From August through to early September you can join some Australia’s literary geniuses for workshops, open talks, seminars and more as they take the floor in local libraries, theatres and event spaces. Melbourne Writer’s Festival is a great place to meet like-minded writers, journalists, scriptwriters and copywriters and partake in some of the heavier topics of modern society through to content and stories on the lighter side of the spectrum.

If that wasn’t enough to get you out of the house and into the cold at least once this month, then, well, you might actually be a bear. Or, we might have missed something worthwhile.
