There’s no shortage of beautiful beaches dotted around Melbourne, with the sparkling water of Port Phillip Bay never too far away. These beaches are perfect for those wanting to relax by the water or take a walk along the sand, but they’re less than ideal for surfers. It used to be that you’d have to venture all the way down to the coast to seek out half-decent waves, but the quest for perfect waves is now over.
Enter URBNSURF, a new paradise for surf lovers of all skill levels and ages, located right in the heart of Tullamarine.

Australia’s first surf park, URBNSURF makes it easier than ever for surfers from near and far to find the perfect wave, with the Melbourne location to be the first of many across the country according to founder Andrew Ross. After visiting a surf park in Spain almost 8 years ago, Ross was inspired to bring the technology and spectacle to Australian shores. The park is designed to make surfing more accessible to those wanting to give it a go, whether they’re enjoying downtime from the pro tour or beginners who are still trying to figure out one end of the board from the other. Visitors will be able to catch the perfect wave in a safe and relaxed setting, that means no nasty rips, no getting dumped on a sandbank and definitely – no sharks.
The 22,000 square metre lagoon took just four days to fill, with the staff working hard since then to slowly build up the waves and have it ready for the upcoming summer, and making sure they can deliver the best experience possible for all visitors. URBNSURF uses Wavegarden Cove technology, which can produce up to 1,000 waves every hour. No more waiting in a crowded lineup for your wave, the press of a button is all that’s needed to deliver the exact wave you want when you want it.

The park is perfect for those who want to try their hand at riding a wave for the first time in a controlled environment or expert riders who are looking for consistent conditions in order to practise a new move. URBNSURF will also serve as home to the Melbourne debut of Three Blue Ducks, the restaurant chain that has already opened popular locations from Byron to Brisbane. The Ducks crew have done their research, exploring the best of Victoria’s wineries and farms to find sustainable and ethically-sourced ingredients. The restaurant will be open for breakfast, lunch and dinner and offers both indoor and outdoor seating that looks over the shimmering waters of the URBNSURF lagoon.

You won’t have to wait long to see what URBANSURF has to offer, with the park open to the public from January 2020 in Airport Drive, Tullamarine. Waves will be flowing from 6am-10 pm throughout the summer months, while hours will be reduced to 9 am-6 pm during winter. There are a number of membership options available, ranging from the Intermediate Membership, $100-$117 a month for 25 sessions a year, to the Gold membership, $259 a month for 50 surf session a year. Visitors can also opt for the Foundation Membership, which includes all the perks of Gold Membership, while also providing access to an exclusive half-day session in December, a behind the scenes tour and invites to VIP events at the park. You can find more information on the features of each membership here, with more passes and pricing information expected to be released in the coming weeks.
